Happy One Year of Living in New York City to ME!

a year ago today i officially moved to new york city. can you believe it? ONE FULL YEAR has gone by since i moved here. it feels like yesterday and sometimes i still have trouble wrapping my head around the fact that i actually live in new york city.

i can easily recall the day - January 26th 2008 - my parents drove me to the airport in Springdale and I was met there by my grandparents and cousin, Kim. the entire texas a&m track and field team was in the airport, as well. flying back to dallas from a meet at the U of A, and i remember seeing those maroon warm-up suits and feeling so close to home (in every way possible) at the very same moment that i was about to board a plane for a destination that was so unknown and unfamiliar. i had SO.MUCH.LUGGAGE and i remember making it (delayed - as per usual when i fly) to the Chicago airport and just hoping and praying that all of my bags would make the transfer and arrive @ la guardia when i did. thankfully, all arrived and i remember it was snowing outside as i got my bags and headed for the taxi line. i began talking to the woman in front of me who worked for better homes & gardens magazine as their art director. i remember thinking how well adjusted she seemed and wondered to myself if that would ever be me. as i got in a cab and headed for an apartment i had never seen before, to meet a roommate i had only met twice, i texted my friends to let them know i had made it and was now “officially” a new yorker. exhausted, i wheeled my bags into my new apartment building, introduced myself to the doorman, and hopped on the elevator to the 16th floor. i recall trying to take it all in; every detail of the building, every sight and smell and sound. every person i passed in the hallway. this is it, i thought. i made it. my first studio apartment was so tiny but so wonderfully fitting for my intial experience of living in the city. dont know what it looked like? check it out here. and the view of the empire state building from my apartment window (here) was absolutely surreal and perfect. i was met by jen and her mother and we all went and ate new york style pizza for dinner. as i fell asleep on my air matress that would become my place of rest for the next 4 months i had NO IDEA what was to come in the next year. or the next week even. its been a roller-coaster but…here i am. exactly one year later.

according to my blog archives it seems the first blog i posted was on january 30th, read what i wrote about my first days in NYC here
